Wireless Sensors Learn From Life

Monsoon rains in the Indian state of Kerala often bring increasedrisk of landslides. What can be done to warn nearby communitiesthat a landslide is imminent

One answer is to use a wireless sensor network to monitorgeological conditions. Wireless sensors are becoming popularbecause the sensor nodes are small, simple and cheap and require nocabling to connect them together and to the control centre. Theycan be used for numerous purposes and are well suited toenvironmental monitoring.

There are downsides, though. Sensors and communication links canfail, and the nodes rely on battery power. Large networks canbecome congested with many sensors reporting at the same time tothe same control centre.

However, what matters is not so much the reliability of theindividual sensors but the reliability of the network as a whole.Does this system reliably monitor air pollution in the city centreDoes that system reliability measure weather conditions on themotorway bridge

Pound May Extend Decline to $1.8300 in Two Weeks, Forecast Says

By Ron Harui

Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- The British pound may extend its decline to$1.8300 in the next two weeks after the currency closed on Aug. 22below so-called support at $1.8620, said Pak Lai Ng, a technical analyst at Forecast Pte Ltd. in Singapore.

Support at $1.8620 was a 61.8 percent retracement of the pound'srise from the November 2005 low of $1.7049 to the November 2007high of $2.1161, based on a series of numbers known as the Fibonacci sequence. Support is where buy orders may be clustered.

The pound is extending the big move down from November,'' Ngsaid. ``The move looks pretty impulsive.''

The pound fell to $1.8438 at 1:30 p.m. in Tokyo from $1.8527 in NewYork on Aug. 22. It reached $1.8413, the lowest since July 26,2006. The currency has dropped 13 percent since touching a 261/2-year high of $2.1161 on Nov. 9.

The $1.8300 level is a 38.2 percent Fibonacci retracement of thecurrency's advance from the June 2001 low of $1.3682 to theNovember 2007 high, according to Ng.

Momentum indicators such as the stochastic oscillator chart signalthe pound may continue to weaken even as they show the currency is``a bit oversold,'' Ng said. ``It could stay oversold for a longtime.''

Flexible packaging suppliers under threat claim

Flexible packaging and multilayer film have many applications for foodproducers particularly for frozen, dry and fresh foods, as well asliquids.

In recent years, the sector has been working to offset growing rawmaterial, energy, transport and labour costs through innovation like down gauging and consumer convenientpackaging options, claims the FPE.

However, an FPE spokesperson told FoodProductionDaily.com that thesqueeze in margins can no longer be balanced by productivityefficiency within the sector and prices now have to be passed downto food processors, if the flexible packaging industry is tocontinue.

Untenable position

The FPE, whose membership represents sales revenue of bn, saidthat food manufacturers will have to work with the sector to

"create solutions to what is becoming an untenableposition."

Raw material prices represent 60 per cent of the total cost offlexible packaging, according to the FPE.

"So designing more effective systems and designing security modelsto ensure that we don't have these problems is what the course isbased around."

He added that big businesses and organisations should not be afraidof students turning "rogue" and using their skills for bad.

"In the industry we refer to people with white hats and black hats, which comes from the old Westerns," he said.

"But realistically we're very careful about the people we take ontothe program.

"We have a strong vetting procedure - in the UK we use things likeDisclosure Scotland to ensure that people that we're taking onaren't coming from a criminal background.

Computer technology update for schools Ok

The school committee has approved a five-year plan aimed atproviding up-to-date computer technology in the classroom.

The annual cost will be about $200,000.

SIt"s a good step, Mayor Joseph Sullivan, who is also aschool committee member, said Monday night. SI hope to update itas we move along. We need to do a lot more in this area.

Committee Chairman Sean Powers said the plan should be reviewedyearly to keep up with constant advances in technology.

Powers said school officials should also see if grant money isavailable to help pay for computer improvements.

The school department has to update its technology plans every fiveyears to qualify for grant money.

Plans now call for replacing up to 60 percent of classroomcomputers over the next five years.

William Kendall, the school department"s director of math andtechnology, told the committee last month that Braintree has madegreat strides since being rated among the state"s worst schooldistricts regarding computer technology as recently as six yearsago.

The schools currently have 1,136 computers for class and staff use.

Kendall said the new technology was needed to better preparestudents to compete in a global economy.

US scientists have developed a way of controlling a compute...

act as a basic on/off switch when people suck and blow through astraw.

"We chose the tongue to operate the system because unlike hands andfeet, which are controlled by the brain through the spinal cord, the tongue is directly connected to the brain by a cranial nervethat generally escapes damage in severe spinal cord injuries orneuromuscular diseases," says Georgia Institute's Maysam Ghovanloo."Tongue movements are also fast, accurate and do not require muchthinking, concentration or effort."

The system can be used to measure a wide variety of tonguemovements, each of which can be assigned to a differentuser-defined task. A recent experiment with six able-bodiedparticipants saw them use their tongues as a substitute for thecomputer mouse, with the testers able to move the cursor across thescreen as well as click and double click.

New analysis by U of M Researcher challenges approach to ove...

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 8/12/2008 ) -- Emerging technologies --such as nanotechnology and biotechnology -- provide great benefitalong with potential risk. Should the consumer be worried aboutproducts in the marketplace that use these technologies How do weknow these products are safe In a new article co-authored byUniversity of Minnesota Humphrey Institute associate professorJennifer Kuzma titled "An Integrated Approach to OversightAssessment for Emerging Technologies," she and her colleagues offera detailed analysis of oversight and regulation procedures designedto protect the user.

U.S. government agencies have been charged with oversight ofresearch and technology to ensure the safety of people and animalsas well as to protect the environment. According to Kuzma, wecannot rely on these current oversight bodies to regulate the kindof emerging technologies we're seeing today.

"Nanotechnology is a great example. It has the potential to advancemedicine, agriculture, health and environmental science and providegreat benefits to society, but there may be safety concerns relatedto the special properties of nanoparticles, such as their greaterabilities to penetrate and move across organs and cells inbiological systems," said Kuzma. "The U.S. oversight systemcurrently relies on agencies and regulations designed for relatedtechnologies, but they are not equipped to adequately handle thenovel properties and unique challenges associated withnanotechnology. In fact, oversight issues associated withapplications for agriculture and food remain largely unexplored."

HYDERABAD: Activists of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party (STPP) hereon Friday took out a protest rally against price hike andestablishment of the Thar Coal Authority in front of the HyderabadPress Club.

Fun in the sun -- with moderation

When Shereen Sabet made the decision to become a more devoutMuslim, she was ready to adhere to the religion's modest dresscode: A woman must wear clothing to cover her entire body, exceptfor her face, hands and feet, in public.

Then another thought entered her mind: "But wait a minute, Ilove to go swimming and snorkeling and I'm a certified scuba diver. Can I still do those things and abide by the dress code"

Sabet, who lives in Huntington Beach, Calif., tried to research heroptions. Because part of the dress code also discouragesbody-clinging attire, even surf vests or rash guards were tooskin-tight. She even considered dry suits, which divers use, but at$800 to $2,000 a suit, it was too costly.

Hiking pants and swim caps didn't fare well, either, so Sabet, amicrobiology scientist at Cal State Long Beach, decided to start aline of Halal swimwear, called Splashgear. The idea was to createswimsuits that would conform to the Muslim dress code, but also becomfortable and fashionable.

The original suit design was based on surf wear and featured floralHawaiian print separates: the "Island Shirt" -- alooser-fitting version of the rash guard, with more fabric in thechest area and a tapered waist -- and swim pants, basically boardshorts turned into straight-leg pants.

A swim cap and swim hood, similar to what scuba divers mightalready wear, completed the suit.

"I understand most people are accustomed to not seeing a lotof clothing on the beach or in the water," Sabet said."We don't want to look like freaks or stick out like sorethumbs for being so covered up on the beach, but I wanted to helpmake water activity accessible to Muslim women."

That was in 2005. Today, Sabet has customers all over the world, including Canada, Asia and Australia. She has updated the design ofthe suit. Gone is the Hawaiian print, replaced by suits in solidcolors with an athletic stripe down the side.

The Secret To Knowing When Stock Options Are Cheap Or Expens...

The Secret To Knowing When Stock Options Are Cheap Or Expensive

For this reason, the better question to ask is why an option isrelatively expensive or inexpensive. Just because an option isexpensive does not mean that it is "over priced." Very good reasonsmay exist for why option price have increased. For example, thereby be an anticipated earnings release. There may also be very goodreason why an option is relatively inexpensive.

As the market becomes more concerned about future price movement, there is a willingness to pay more for options to protect equitypositions or to take advantage of anticipated price movement. Oncethose concerns pass, option prices will likely fall to lowerlevels.

The answer to questions requires a study of implied volatility andhow we might use it to assess current option prices. An option isonly inexpensive if you expect implied volatility to increase.Options are only expensive if you expect implied volatility torise.

You can quickly determine the current implied volatility for anyoption through any decent options broker. Once you know what thecurrent implied volatility is for an professional upholsterycleaners you can then compare it to where implied volatilities havebeen in the past. You can also compare current implied volatilityto the historic volatility of the underlying security.

SCOTT REED:Hancock Fabrics goes the extra mile in its action...

When a company files for bankruptcy protection, it is never a goodthing. And in recent years it has been very bad news, not only forthe shareholders, but for the debt holders as well.

I only have to mention WorldCom and Enron for most people tounderstand what I mean. But there are other examples as well.

Back in the early part of my career, a particular company filed forbankruptcy protection. After quite a long time in court workingthrough the myriad issues that companies in bankruptcy have to workthrough, the company came out of bankruptcy with a brand new stockissuance and a new lease on life. The only problem is that many ofits previous shareholders had no idea that the new stock hadnothing to do with the old stock.

The company kept its name and it issued new stock with the samename as its old stock. For years after the company had came out ofbankruptcy, clients would come into my brokerage office and try tosell the old stock for the price quoted in the newspaper. It wascruel and unusual punishment, I thought. We had to tell people thattheir stock was worthless.

  Notable exception

It is so much easier to take the path of least resistance. Make afresh start. Forget the past. But just because the court says youcan ignore your former shareholders and debt holders doesn't meanthat it is the right thing to do. Corporate America has rarely beenaccused of having a heart, but there are exceptions to that ruleand Hancock Fabrics is a notable exception.

This fall's hot color Mustard yellow

"I think it's good in small doses. I don't think you want to investin a coat of this color."

Lakeshore Foods Wholegrain Mustard With Guinness Extra Stout

Kors describes this grainy mix of rust and yellow as "warm" -- themodern answer to the more staid camel. It's a color that translateswell into accessories, especially those with texture, but it alsolooks good in a sweater, skirt or coat.

"It's a flattering color on every woman. It's not a color I thinkyou're going to want for an evening situation but it will lookgreat in the daytime."

Another suggestion: Include this shade in an animal print. If it'sthe brightest shade in the print, you're wearing an eye-catchingneutral -- not an easy feat and something to be proud of.

Stonewall Kitchen Sun-Dried Tomato Mustard

Make an investment in this burnt orange with flecks of yellow andbrown, Kors advised.

"You're going to see a lot of melding of all these colors, especially a glen plaid or a check. They work like the solid that'snot a solid. A good investment piece isn't always black pants or awhite dress."

MOODYS: NO PREFERENCE FOR FANNIE, FREDDIE

Despite the strength in the financial services sector in Friday’s action, Fannie Mae

(FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) have turned in one of their patented bellyflops in the session.Shares of each have lost some early progress, and traded narrowlylower in intraday action. The declines came after Moody’sInvestor Service cut its rating on the company’s preferredequity. The rating agency said the government-sponsored entitieshave lost the financial flexibility to deal with crises - and, indeed, have lost the financial flexibility to execute their publicpolicy mission of keeping the mortgage markets liquid. Meanwhile, government officials have been quoted by Reuters as insisting thatany effort on the part of the U.S. Treasury to backstop the GSEswould not alter the shareholder-owned model the companies currentlyemploy. There has been widespread speculation that any move thegovernment might make would immediately wipe out common shares.

Apple's MobileMe Lacks Key Security Feature

Users of Apple's MobileMe have already discovered that the US$99-per-year service issometimes slow and unreliable, and they're now talking aboutanother shortcoming that was intentional.MobileMe allows users to synchronize e-mail, calendar and contactinformation among various devices over the Internet. Although thelog-in process for MobileMe is encrypted, Apple does not encryptdata that users send from browsers through MobileMe. The lack ofSSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or any other form of encryption meansthat if a MobileMe user is connected to the Internet via a Wi-Fihotspot, someone else connected to the same hotspot couldrelatively easily see all the data that the MobileMe user sends."Seems like a pretty major omission for a service that'sspecifically aimed at roaming users," wrote a person called ShepUKon the Macrumors forum. He called the lack of SSL encryption a deal breaker for him. From www.chinatopsupplier.com
